Week 1  Observation

http://magistudio.net/work/advanced-play-design-week-1-2

I didn't find anything available through observation myself this week, so I expanded to observe my own bedroom, observing the guitar in the corner of the bedroom, and came up with a simple game concept: the player can scan and adjust the color and intensity of each string through an AR app on the phone, and play a piece of music, so the sound will be collected by the phone and the corresponding paintings are generated by this piece of music. Since each song played by each person will be different, the presented pictures are also unique. The picture can be passionate, lively or quiet and so on, and the player can make a better self-observation through the generated picture.

Week 2  Tinkering

This week I played with sequence frame animation and created a simple sequence frame animation to show the effects in AR. I made a panel similar to the character background introduction as an example to make it more interesting. I learned some extra skills during this whole tinker thing, such as making and importing sequence frames animation in Unity. It is also a perfect outcome that supports my studio work, because it is kind of combines AR & UI, and it shows some space that I can explore, like to enhance the card game.

Week 3  Materiality

http://magistudio.net/work/apd-week3-2

For this week's theme, I made a paper box for me to scan, which is applied in my AR painting, because the scanned object is a three-dimensional thing, so it provides more possibilities, such as I can scanned one side of the paper box and the effect came out of the back of it. I used this feature to make a painting brush.

Week 4  Place

http://magistudio.net/work/apd-week4-2

This week I made a short video that combines the imaginary and realistic places. I was thinking that if we can control things in different places with the control tools in the software, of course, I was doing augmented reality instead of changing the reality, (and it is impossible to change the reality...) so this is just a way of thinking: when we look at different places, what will be the thing that we expect to play with, to interact with?

Week 5  Objects

http://magistudio.net/work/apd-week5-1

This week I re-observed the object in my studio project. I think my brush is too thin with only one image, and the effect of constantly copying these images is not good, so I think about making some changes to the brush. I eventually turned the brush into cubes and added a trailing effect instead of a bunch copy of images to make it feel more like painting.

Rationale

Through the study of advanced play design and the practice and production after class, my thinking is more divergent, and at the same time has a lot of positive impact on my studio project. For example, it proposes more directions and possibilities for my project’s expansion. And by combining weekly themes with weekly exercises, I have more ideas and a deeper understanding of my AR project. I have come to look at AR from a different perspective, not just scanning something and some other things pop out this kind of simple mechanic.
