Master Of Animation, Games & Interactivity

In Week 8 of AN, we dealt with Time and the different ways of representing it and moving through it. I decided to show how time affects a person by letting her break off into birds and feathers. I thought it would be a great way to represent the concept of breaking away from whatever shackles we are under as we get older, but losing ourselves in the process.

At first, I created a short story thumbnail and later developed it into a video prototype in after effects. I used stencil alpha mode to make it seem as if the birds were breaking out of the girl and soaring into the sky, with the help of a few transform animations. I tried adding the feathers into particle world but the result ended up looking quite unnatural so I shifted to manual transform tools.

I was inspired by the works of Japanese artist Avogado6 that take in harsh social issues and produce beautifully nuanced and meaningful pieces through metaphor.

In particular, his work ‘High’ that seems to represent a person reaching freedom through the use of drugs made me think, what if rather than through the use of drugs, people could lose themselves by simply existing and passing time in this world. Thus I decided to represent the ideas of freedom and losing yourself.

From the weekly watching, I found Kintsugi: The Art of Damage really interesting because it talked about the Japanese concept of 'wabisabi' of finding beauty in the imperfection. Instead of hiding the flaws, they're highlighted for aesthetic effect. It was a difficult concept for me to come to terms with, but I do see the beauty in flaws and I think my weekly work reflects that too.
