Day 4 Intention and Summary

2/07/2020 AGI Workshop Day 4

INTENTION: Further ideation

A)  TO DO

  • Stitch (assemble?) Carrot for Isobel. PSD?  Animation assembled but not playing back past halfway point. Different software?
  • Shoot Cubes. Set up for Cubes. Draw Cubes?
  • Start MAGI AGI Workshop presentation. Talk to existing notes.

B)  Work on Butterfly House, Board 2, thumbnails

C) Brain breaks – response to discovered moments

RATIONALE
A) Why – Observation of movement and recording of stages. Daughter wants to see Carrot!
B) Why – Body of works around theme, bring together.         On or off the table.
C) Provides physical activity, stretches ideas, opens scope for more.

CONTEXT
B) Needs work to gather sources. When are they relevant? Am I ready or do I keep working through the backlog. Some already presented in Day 1.

METHODS
A) How
 – Carrot. Combine in Photoshop or ????? Frames made in psd and used Bridge to observe (Mark Sheardo method in lieu of Storyboard Pro)
– Move installation to black backdrop, set up iPhone/tripod/ space btn background/mobile and camera important to avoid distortion.
B) How - draw through with THUMBNAILS to see if I can resolve story issues through drawing (cfr writing)

OUTCOME
A) Carrot viewable as footage – Mov, MP4 etc.
    Cubes viewable as moving footage.
B) What – Butterfly House on or off the table. Board of exploratory thumbnails.

Day 4
SUMMARY

A) Technical issues again using PSD - only half the frames are playing back. Is it worth investing the time in another software learning or BETTER tutorial for PSD? This may be an important part of taking paper to film, or just the ability to make a quick exploration.

B) Butterfly House FELL OFF the table but the process is beginning to feel comfortable. Following the re-imagining of Star/Triangle yesterday I am beginning to feel confident that I can think through a sequence/story. The intense investigation of the last three days has given rise to greater clarity around my CREATIVE PROCESS. I have been aware that whilst working on the main activity (commercial job/housekeeping/kids wrangling etc) these moments of connection come. Catching those moments/insights as they arise and quickly putting them into form* is a new finding. The form does not need to be drawing; it can be filming, or some other use of materials. I have also learnt that getting it out of my head lays it to rest – it stops needing to be heard, which chokes up other ideas. Let the gas out of the bottle before you get to the soda water (that’s a bit pure!). My challenge will be making this type of practice accessible whilst handling commercial work and domestic insistence!

A surprise/shift/moment from your practice yesterday that helped you to refine or redirect your intention?

My surprise in this gathering momentum was coming to a new idea which coalesces some of my existing concerns, forms explored with minimal intention and some WRITING. Making a space where my brain connected dots without my conscious input. In Chris’s GAPS (I was focussed on getting ready for the start of the class).

An image/output from your practice from yesterday that demonstrates a significant step forward in terms of practice, it might relate to point 2, above or it might sit apart.  (*See above.)

C)  Whilst Butterfly House FELL OFF the table I feel okay leaving it where it is – I said what I wanted to say in the original sculpture. As a form the house continues to inform my practice. Investigating the idea opened up the idea of thinking vertically. The Cubes are less clear for me and may present as a future exploration of movement.
