Master Of Animation, Games & Interactivity

In week 3, I mainly focused on my character design. Not having a script or concept art to design my character from means that I don’t have any notes on the character’s personality as well as physical traits. Hence, in order to come up with such traits, I’m mostly looking at sculptural figures and paintings, picking and choosing the traits that I think are appropriate for my character. To inform my work, I’m carrying out research into the anatomy of my characters as well. Designing a character in 2D format relies heavily on drawing ability which I lack, so I’m using Lynda tutorials to teach myself to draw digitally.

After consulting with Max, I realised that I need to focus on having a weekly goal for my work. It can even be having once sentence for each week and working towards that.

example: “I want to make my character blink this week.”

Moving forward I would like to do ‘model sheets’ which show the character from different angles, so I can ensure each frame of animation is “on model”. But I’m not quite sure if it’s feasible with the limited time that I have, so I might be better off experimenting rather than planning. I also would like to fall into the habit of thumbnailing, because rough thumbnails help to flesh out many directions that I could take for my character. For next week I need to start animating the character and make him blink. Also, I need to stop paying attention to the coloring so much and focus on movements even if the work wouldn't be as detailed as I anticipated.
