✎what I’m doing this semester (in a nutshell)

  • ✎ direction 

With this work, I intend to explore ideas of repressing painful memories and trauma. This idea is, essentially, to visually represent traumatic memories being held back in an aesthetic and surreal way. 

The idea will be expressed as an animation with related vignettes of a girl going through her daily life, but with the ever present burden of the traumatic memory. 
 

When finished, the work will develop the concept by portraying a sense of surreal melancholy that people may be able to relate to, sympathise with and enjoy watching. 

 
 

✎ rationale 

 
 

The reason for doing this work is that I want to visually represent something nonvisual like memory and trauma in a surreal way, I want to bring across the idea that when certain events take place, it might not seem real, or not mesh with the daily life of the person. 

If successful, the work will exhibit excellence in a stylized way of letting people experience and understand a hard to grasp concept with 2D animation.  

My work will be different from existing work because it can act as a stylistic piece of aesthetic animation while also being a narrative based character animation. 

 
 

✎ context 

 
 

In terms of surreal aesthetic concept, other similar works I have come across are トーコ Toko who draws clouds on pedestrian crossings and whales in the sky, and meyoco who draws galaxies in teacups and flowers inside mermaid tails. 

In terms of the idea of having a deep, even dark subject matter presented in a cute artstyle, Penguindrum, Madoka Magica, Gakkou Gurashi comes to mind. 

Examining the context, I can see that these kinds of works thrive on the reveal, and making people feel conflicting emotions, positive ones responding to the art, and negative ones responding to the subjects 

 
 

✎method 

 
 

The materials I intend to use are vector lines and balloons in clip studio paint to  make my 2D animation. 

In order to express the concept, I have chosen to work in csp because, csp is good for hand drawn frame by frame animation. it’s difficult to use transform tools. So, if I decide to have camera pans or transforming motions, I’ll do it in after effects.  
 

My workflow and method will allow for the best expression of the idea because the balloons and vectors will allow for quick workflow and animation as a medium lets surreal imagery be more  believable and natural.
