Yamamoto Soubi’s Works

Yamamoto Soubi is an indie animator, who has produced many shorts OVAs, a few notable ones being the Kono Dashi series, Robotica*Robotics, Happiness and so on. She had her director debut at just 20 years old and has worked on many different types of projects including audio dramas, movies, and manga where she was essentially an ‘auteur’.

Although Soubi’s works often involve some type of fantastical element in it (mermaid, aliens, crystallization, robots), the main themes are always grounded in humanity. In Robotica*Robotics, for instance, the story centralizes on 2 robots that were abandoned trying to find the meaning of love.  In Happiness, a 30 second short, 2 characters discuss what makes them happy.

It’s hard to put into words all the unassuming moments that make up intense emotional arcs. I’ve never found stories that are more touching, more heartrendingly beautiful than the ones Yamamoto Soubi writes.

Another thing that separates Yamamoto sensei’s work from others in the industry is her unique style of animation. The characters’ movements are clunky but still manages to portray meaningful gestures and shifts in expressions. Her linework is jagged, but her colours are bright and overlain with different textures. Every single aspect of Yamamoto Soubi’s works are delicately crafted and sewn with her overflowing passion. I wonder if I can ever make works that can pierce hearts and souls as hers can.
