Week 4

This is my first time combining 2D animation with 3D animation. The overall outcome is satisfying. I learnt something about rigging and used it to rig the Shy Basket and the Sleepy Rock. I’ve animated a bit with them. I hope to do more with them in the following week for Folio 1.

However, I’m seriously thinking about changing the 2D animation into pure 3D elements, e.g. bean eyes or just using the cel-shading property to create a 2D style. This is because the process of adding 2D facial expression to character is a bit repetitive and boring. And if I want them to be perfectly matching with the action of the modelling, I have to preplan or animate in 3D prior to animate in 2D.

In week 4, I decided to do an 11-sec club animation challenge as well. I explored and played with the Mery rig during my time animating. Although I haven’t thoroughly understood how the rig works, it’s a good rig to animate with.

Reflection:

  1. Make sure to apply freeze transformation before rigging.
  2. Remember to add a global scaling to the rig.
  3. For 11 sec club, I’m not happy with mostly four things:
  •  The action of Mery before it sings ‘waving goodbye’.
  •  The ending is too stiff.
  •  Mery’s facial expression could be further exaggerated.
  •  Lee should be in the shot a bit longer, thus, the first head turn should have happened slower.
