Master Of Animation, Games & Interactivity

Theme: Play and Materiality
Method: After Brendan’s lecture in class, I wanted to try and tackle this week’s exercise by touching upon my discipline, the elements of Advanced Play Design, and Materiality all equally. The presentation and example showed that Materiality could be tackled through the connection of the physical and digital world. I decided to choose this method.
Context: For my mind map exercise I wrote myself down as a 2D animator where my main tool and way of presentation was digital. To utilize Advanced Play Design, I chose the keywords Experiment, Making, Methods, and Interactivity. I now had to find a way to connect this information with Materiality.
Response: Because I mostly work digitally, I wanted to use Materiality as an opportunity to change the way I interacted with my creation that didn’t feel so mundane. So creating a physical platform from the real world and having the character in the digital world react accordingly was a fun way for me to incorporate my discipline, Advanced Play Design, and Materiality.
The experiment proved to be more difficult than I had imagined as I had to go through many trial and error to have the two world respond accurately as possible (I would miss my mark many times). By only giving myself 3 hours, the final result is still far from perfect. For me this was definitely a new way of looking at my animation as I require to be there with the right timing for the animation to make sense.
