Theme

Play and Time

Context

At the beginning of this week's presentation, there is a short video of people using some sticks to change the digital timer. So I start with this element, and try to find something interesting. I start with the watch, which has both the traditional round appearance and digital appearance. I use my phone to record the watch. However, because it is video by the phone that I hold, the view is kind of shaking, which is hard to use as a material for making animation. Then, I just make a digital appearance for the clock directly by After Effect and make it animate. Till this stage, I still have no idea about what theme I want to present in this production. I am just making something that might be useful for this production. Then, when I preview the animation of the clock, sometimes the video might pause because of the rendering. Because I am new to After Effect, sometimes I need to spend a little bit of time to find the icon. So sometimes the video pause, I have no idea the pause is because of the rendering or I click something accidentally. This gives me the idea  about the state of video. So I made this clock video to try to present a feeling of pause video.

Method

  • Using After Effect to make the animation of number

  • Combine the number animation to make the animation of working timer

  • Make a pendulum animation and add it to the timer animation

  • Add the clock sound

  • Cut the animation and sound and create the pause view

  • Add the transitions

Response

This is about how important interaction is. This is only a video. How can people identify whether the timer is working or not. The video is the content for the audience to play, the video does not present how to play. When the audience watches the video, it is the video I made to play with the audience. The result of this playing will show after finishing this video.

The video is about whether the video is paused or not. When people watch the video, how people define the video is pausing or working without any other element, such as the start / pause icon and the progress bar. If something that is moving on the screen and audience has a sense about the video is long. Then the pause in an unexpected point might make the audience feel weird and start to check whether the video is going to continue. It gives an impression to the audience that the timer is supposed to keep running until we click pause.

Reflection

Personally I like the topic I chose, but  I do not know whether I present the idea well. The clock animation took me a day to make, but now I found that there is a better way to present this idea and not need such a long time to make the animation. The animation can be replaced by any other video that is continuous. The thing I need to do to the video is pause the video at some moments, which is similar to the clock animation that I made. Because I think the clock animation does present a good feeling.
