Theme: Play and Observation (Observation of Self)

Context:  Given the task of self-observation, I realized that I never observe or really look at myself in the mirror. My thoughts then proceeded to go to situations where other people would observe or analyse me, which were often intimate or social gatherings, and more recently, a job interview. I thought that during these job interviews, people observe other people in a much more discerning manner, anchored by what seems to define the worth of each person in a physical piece of paper –  their resume.

I wanted to explore a playful, if not surreal, portraiture of myself inspired by Bert Simon’s paper sculptures, however, using a mask made out of my own resume. During job interviews and applications, resumes are often one person’s core of being, definition, and worth, observed then analysed by other persons or employers. I find it fascinating that a single short document, defines an individual's future, and hopes to survive or strive for a more comfortable life.

Method: A 3D animated sequence utilizing facial photogrammetry on my face, and animation/camera techniques in Cinema 4D and AE.

Response: Resuface is 3D animated sequence wherein a person’s worth, or identity, is observed, defined, and sometimes masked by what is in his or her resume.

Notes: Observing the topography of my face during the photogrammetry process, I also intended o create a first-person game that makes the skin of my face, the ground in which the user feels like a tiny insect walking on an alien landscape. I shelved that idea because of time constraints. With this week’s response, I explored 3D animation tools that I haven’t used, as well as develop my Cinema 4D and/or Unity animation skills.
