Place and Play

Context

Kate showed me this website  https://1945.melbourne/  where they show Melbourne in 1945 comparing to now. Even though it doesn’t get too closer, it was a perfect reference for this app.

Method

While Kate was telling us about the exercise, I started thinking that this time I wanted to make something that wasn’t only fun and interesting but at the same time which teaches something, and I thought about designing a game that will be connected to google maps.
So, when the person looks for a location in google maps, and when she is on her way, some bottoms will jump to invite the player (Available only for public transport or walking).

When the person clicks on it, the game would start. It opens in the far distance the map of Melbourne, and then it takes him to a close view of the blur building, it could be hospitals, universities, parks, arcade…etc. Then the player would need to select the correct answer to get points. The questions and answers could be a little tricky because would be about other years too.

Once the player selects the correct answer, the app would show a little story of what was before in that place.
It’s a real-time game, where the view of the app would be satellite.

* I found very interesting facts from some places like:

1) Cooder Island: By 1909 the area was being used as an animal quarantine station and after 1915 as a sanatorium for victims of bubonic plague and other contagious diseases. By the 1920s the area was inhabited by hermits living in huts and abandoned ships. In 1927 the Larkin Aircraft Supply Company had set up operations on the island, including a factory and aerodrome, which was used until World War II. In 1960 the area began being used for the storage of petrochemicals.

2) Royal Arcade Melbourne: Opened in 1870, it is the oldest surviving arcade in Australia, known for its elegant light-filled interior, and the large carved mythic figures of Gog and Magog flanking the southern entry.

I don’t have the time to learn to do an app for this exercise, so I’m doing a mock-up and a short animatic of the experience with images from Google maps.
I edited the pictures in photoshop, designed the bottom in illustrator and made the animatic in After Effects.

Reflection

Personally I get lost very easily, and even having 8 months living in Melbourne, it’s hard for me to remember the location of some places, I just don’t pay attention sometimes, so I think this app could be fun and interesting for anyone that is in Melbourne, it would help people to observe better the city and to learn more about it.
