In response to the theme of Forces, I made character sprites with the three constraints of only 4 colours (black and white included), a size restraint of 64x64, and requires some form of detail be it as shading, or texture. The character sprites were created using the pixel art software Piskel.

With the character sprites, I had to ensure there were 4 colours for each character that are carefully selected which will make up the art be it for the base, shading, highlights, and texture. The characters were of Japanese mythology being an oni (ogre), tengu (heavenly sentinel), and kitsune (fox) which I had to use colours which will best reflect their representation in Japanese artworks. Outline played a key role in creating a clear silhoutte for the character sprites due to the lack of colours, line would of assisted in communicating the shape of the character.

I was inspired by the sprites used in the games Pokemon Red and Blue for the Nintendo Gameboy as they also created sprites with constraints in mind for the game. The sprites would only include 4 colours, a constrainted size which the artist had to ensure the Pokemon (monsters) would fit within, and have detail to help inform if the Pokemon has any form of texture be it furry or shiny.
