Context

The practice of this week is abstraction. I didn't understand this topic very well at first, until I saw the works shared in class that made me gradually understand this topic. Among them, the animated short film ‘A Colour Box’ (1932) by Len Lye and the work of Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944) inspired me a lot. The theme of abstraction emerged in a certain period and has its unique significance. I learned more about the history and definition of abstraction through ‘The Case for Abstraction’. I realize that the opposite of abstraction is not realism, it's just that many real things cannot be seen. The emotions and consciousness they have are real, so artists will create them. I decided to decompose the object and give abstract new play with form and color. I also got inspiration from the plot of an animated short film, Pixar's animation called ‘The Blue Umbrella’(2013). Then I will try to make abstract gameplay with common objects in daily life.

Method

I will use Procreate to draw some illustrations, and then use AE to make a small loop animation to show the interesting places of abstract life. I will give objects more vivid value in terms of abstract shapes, colors and emotions

Response

This is my first attempt to create illustrations and videos with abstract concepts. I try to understand abstract concepts, create with shapes and colors and the emotions of the objects themselves, and find a lot of references for abstraction. Every object or mechanical device has some specific trajectory. I understand that abstraction is an expression of emotion that gives something invisible to the eye, so the trajectory can be created.  My work is about a breakfast scene, so I used bright and fresh colors.  The bread will move when it is baked, and the tape in the player will also move when it is replaced. The trajectory of the movement is invisible to us, but I have given different colors and shapes to the different trajectories, hoping to express the emotion of the trajectory.

Reflection

To be honest, this exercise has taught me a lot. Because it was a topic I didn't understand at all, I found a lot of learning videos at the beginning to try to understand abstract concepts. It was a very interesting learning process. When I was creating, I also abandoned my previous style and tried a new way of expression. I think it was a very meaningful experience. Whenever there is no inspiration to continue, I continue to look for references and get inspiration from the abstract works of other artists. In order not to be restricted by my existing knowledge, I began to constantly try new expressions. I don't know if this exercise is considered a success, but the process did enable me to learn a lot. In the next few exercises, I will continue the same enthusiasm this week and try my best to try new things and new expressions. I think this is the meaning of creation.
