Master Of Animation, Games & Interactivity

Theme:

Play and Self

Context:

In terms of the theme, the first thing comes to my mind is, who am I and how do I identify myself? It’s a very abstract question, which may have been answered by philosophers. Thus, I did an inquiry about how to reply to the question that I had. I find an animation on TED Education Channel called “Who am I?” Who am I? A philosophical inquiry - Amy Adkins Then I come up the idea about I can identify whatever I want.

There's an old saying 'We're what we eat'. This reminds me how different the food I have in Melbourne. And I have been impacted by fast food, I gained lots of weight since I get here. Thus I decide to make a portrait with the drawing of food through collage method.

Method:

I draw two illustrations about my face outline, most of the food I’ve been eating since I arrived in Melbourne. Then create the masks for each part of my head. Make clipping-masks for each part with food illustrations. Import the file into AE and add text animation, then edit it in PR. At last, add sound effects for the animation.

Response:

In terms of self-portrait, the normal way to demonstrate myself stuck in my head. I couldn't get rid of it. I was thinking about an illustration or a selfie. While I was thinking I draw a sketch of myself. However, the request for the assignment is being more playful and experimental. I go through the slide we had in the class and thinking about what can I do with the sketch. Then, the rest of the work emerged. I am pretty happy with the result rather than a normal self-sketch. I made an illustration first. After I finished it, I thought since I have done the work, why don't I make it go further and make it into a short piece of animation? Then I import it in AE and edit it a little bit.

Reflection:

After I finished all the work, I reckon in terms of play, maybe I can do a collage with takeaway flyers next time. Especially during quarantine time, I guess most people have it in the house. It also makes the point of' We are what we eat', since the more things we order the more flyers we may have. And this may turn out a totally different result.
