ADVANCED PLAY DESIGN: FOLIO 1
Week One - Play & Observation
While I was first thinking about a concept for my studio 4, I was kind of drowned in a flood of ideas. I couldn’t finalise and focus on one concept. I was just walking on the road while thinking of a concept for my assignment, a Mclaren drove past me. That is what got me thinking, “What thing interests me the most?” The answer that I instantly got was cars. I have always been fascinated by cars and their assets (spoilers, rims, bumpers, etc.)
The first thing that I observed about the Mclaren was the rims. That is when I decided to model such rims in 3D software (Maya). I decided to model a low poly rim first and then detail it further as per needed. From this I was able to come up with a concept for my Studio project, where my initial concept was to create a short introduction video for a car.
Week Two - Play & Tinkering
I used the theme of tinkering to discover ways in which I could texture and light up a scene in 3D space. The act of play and tinkering has helped me thoroughly to understand how lighting works in a 3D production cycle. Lighting is one of the most important aspects in my studio project.
To try out different lighting and texturing techniques, I decided to try it with a3D watch model that was already created by me. By tinkering and messing around with the lightingv settings and plug-ins in maya I achieved a semi-realistic render. This type of play helped me a lot in my studio project as I could freely experiment with the lighting and texturing settings in Maya.
Week Three - Play and Materiality
I decided to use Materiality and play to learn basic sound design. I decided to create an animatic which will also help my studio project. It was interesting to work in the field of sound. I explored the web to collect some sample sounds of cars revving. I also used the Motion Pulse sound package for some stock pulse sound and lights turning on and sliding metal doors.
Combining all these sounds, I created a soundtrack draft. This included the sound of lightings turning on in a rhythm and metal doors sliding into the walls. I then decided to add this soundtrack draft to my storyboard thumbnails to create an animatic which will allow me to have a better understanding of time and length of my project.
Week Four - Play and Place
The theme for this week was place. I decided to use this class to design and build a 3D environment that will serve as the basic look and feel for my project. Exploiting the theme of place and using play, I created a garage in 3D space. I created a lot of lights along the walls and ceiling, and I will be animating them to give a certain rhythm and flow to the camera movement in the scene. Using this theme, I tried and tested various look and feels for the garage, and finally settled for the basement look which is also technologically advanced and futuristic.
Week Five - Play and Objects
To proceed with my Studio project, I decided to use the theme of objects to create a 3D car model that will be showcased in the environment that I had created last week. I tried to model the car with as much details as possible. I even rigged the doors of the car so that I can animate the motion of the doors opening and closing. I also used play and objects to design and layout the position of the object that I have created with the environment. I took into consideration the size of the object and the positing of the object which could be most impactful.
